Geography of Pandalam Municipality

 

Pandalam Municipality is located in the western part of Pathanamthitta District, in the state of Kerala. It is one of the major urban centers of central Travancore and is well known for its association with Sabarimala Temple and Lord Ayyappa.

Location

  • Situated about 16 km west of Pathanamthitta town and around 15 km from Chengannur.
  • Lies on the western boundary of Pathanamthitta district, adjoining parts of Alappuzha District. 

Area and Extent

  • Total geographical area: approximately 28.42 sq. km.
  • It is one of the largest urban local bodies in Pathanamthitta district by area.
  • The municipality consists of 33 wards. 

Relief and Topography

  • Pandalam is predominantly a midland region of Kerala.
  • The terrain consists of gently undulating plains with low hills and fertile agricultural lands.
  • Most of the developed urban area follows the major transportation corridors, while several parts still retain a rural character. 

Rivers and Water Resources

  • The Achankovil River forms the northern boundary of the municipality and is the most important natural feature of the area.
  • Many wards are located along the riverbanks, making the municipality vulnerable to seasonal flooding during heavy monsoon periods. 

Climate

  • Pandalam experiences a tropical monsoon climate.
  • Summers are warm and humid.
  • The southwest and northeast monsoons bring substantial rainfall.
  • Temperatures generally range from 22°C to 34°C throughout the year. 

Transportation Geography

Pandalam is an important road junction where:

  • Main Central Road (MC Road / SH-1)
  • Mavelikkara–Pathanamthitta Road

meet, providing connectivity to major towns such as Adoor, Chengannur, Thiruvalla, Pathanamthitta and Thiruvananthapuram. The nearest railway station is Chengannur, about 15 km away.

  • Thumpamon to the east
  • Pandalam Thekkekara to the south
  • Parts of Alappuzha District to the west.
